Discover Shiso

Shiso, also known as Perilla, is a fragrant herb from the mint family, cherished in Japanese cuisine. It grows as an annual plant and comes in two vibrant colors: green and red. Green shiso is often enjoyed fresh with salads or raw fish, while red shiso is prized for coloring dishes and adding a unique flavor to marinades.

Beyond its beautiful aroma, shiso is packed with goodness. Its leaves contain vitamins B and C, beta-carotene (which offers antioxidant and soothing benefits), rosmarinic acid (helpful for allergies), alpha-linolenic acid (a healthy omega-3 fatty acid), and a rich mix of minerals.

A Taste of Japanese Tradition

In Japan, shiso is harvested in June and July, just as families begin pickling ume (Umeboshi—salted plums). Red shiso is often pickled with the plums, giving them their signature color, while the rest is used to make shiso juice—a refreshing, energizing drink for Japan’s hot, humid summers.

For many Japanese, the tart and slightly bitter flavor of shiso juice brings back fond memories of childhood visits to grandparents in the countryside, where a cold glass of freshly made shiso juice was always waiting.

Grown on Our Farm in Møn

Our farm, built in 1850, came into our care in the summer of 2020. It spans one hectare, including a small flock of 3–4 ewes with their lambs, and a 300 m² vegetable garden we established in 2021. Here, we grow around 40 different vegetables, herbs, and fruits—all without pesticides or chemicals. We nourish our soil naturally with seaweed and compost from our sheep and chickens, all sourced within 20 kilometers of the farm.

Every bottle of our shiso juice carries the essence of our land, our care, and a touch of Japanese summer tradition.
